The basics of lasik enhancement

Most people have heard of lasik eye surgery. They know that it is an enhancement surgery that is supposed to help correct bad vision. What most people do not know is how lasik works and what they should know before choosing to get lasik enhancement. In addition most people do not understand how important it is to know everything you can about lasik before even speaking with a surgeon.

The word lasik stands for laser assisted in Situ Keratomileusis. The basic idea behind lasik is to change the shape of the cornea. The cornea is the clear lens in your eye. It is responsible for taking images and sending them to the retina where they then go to the brain and making us able to see. Sometimes the cornea is not shaped right and these images are distorted. This is the reason some people can not see well. During a lasik surgery a flap is cut in the cornea and then a laser is used to reshape the middle section of the cornea. Ideally after lasik surgery a patient should be able to see with 20/20 vision. However, there is no guarantee that this will happen. It is very difficult for a surgeon to know exactly how misshaped the cornea is and therefore it is equally difficult to reshape the cornea to perfection. Most people do get almost perfect vision. However, there are chances for complications. A patient may not experience any significant vision change, experience problems seeing at night or develop new eye problems.

To minimize the chances of complications your surgeon should determine if you are a good candidate. Basically a good candidate does not have any preexisting eye problems and is in general good health. Obviously the first thing your doctor will look at is the condition of your eye. If your problems do not result from a misshaped cornea then lasik will not help you. Also chances of experiencing problems are greater if you have large pupils, a thin cornea or dry eyes. Also some medications can affect the way your body heals. If you are on any medication your doctor should know. Other considerations include some more personal things. You will be advised to make sure your job will not be impacted due to time off, etc. You should also completely understand the cost and how you will pay for it. Most importantly you should understand the risks and that lasik may not correct your vision completely and you may still need glasses and contact lenses. Do not hide anything form your doctor. Determining if you are a good candidate is one of the most important parts of the lasik procedure.

Knowing more about lasik before you begin the process will help to make sure that lasik is something you really want to do. Results of lasik are permanent and there is nothing to do once it is started. Knowledge is important when it comes to lasik enhancement and understanding everything about the procedure is essential.
